Which vehicles require an electronic vignette in Slovenia?

For electronic vignette purposes, vehicles are divided into three categories. Category 1 is intended for motorcycles. Category 2A includes standard passenger vehicles, motorhomes and certain vans. Category 2B is intended for taller vehicles, such as certain SUVs, vans or multi-purpose passenger vehicles. Vehicles with a maximum technically permissible mass exceeding 3.5 tonnes are subject to the DarsGo electronic distance-based charging system.

How far in advance can I purchase a Slovenian electronic vignette?

If you are planning a trip to Slovenia, you do not have to wait until the day of departure to purchase an electronic vignette. A Slovenian e-Vignette can be purchased up to 30 days before the start of its validity. When placing your order, you select the date from which the e-Vignette should be valid, and you do not need to take any further steps to activate it. This allows you to arrange all the necessary travel requirements in advance and focus only on the final details before your departure.

When does my Slovenian electronic vignette become valid?

We will let you know that your Slovenian e-Vignette is ready to use by sending you an activation confirmation email. If you selected an immediate validity start when placing your order, you can use the e-Vignette as soon as it has been activated. If you selected a future validity start date, the e-Vignette will only be valid from that date. You will usually receive the e-Vignette activation confirmation within a few minutes of completing your order.

How do I know whether my vehicle falls into category 2A or 2B?

The vehicle’s overall height is not the determining factor; what matters is the height of the vehicle above the front axle. If this height is 1.3 metres or less, the vehicle belongs to category 2A. If it exceeds 1.3 metres, the vehicle generally falls into category 2B. Category 2A usually includes standard passenger cars, most motorhomes and certain vans. Category 2B, on the other hand, often includes some taller SUVs, vans or minibuses. If you are unsure, stand next to the vehicle’s front wheel and measure the distance from the road surface to the highest fixed point of the vehicle above the front axle, beneath the front section of the vehicle and before the windscreen. If the measured height is no more than 1.3 metres, the vehicle belongs to category 2A. If the measured height exceeds 1.3 metres, it belongs to category 2B. The vehicle’s overall height stated in the registration document is not relevant when determining whether it falls into category 2A or 2B.

The electronic vignette requirement also applies to most expressways, such as H3 (the Ljubljana motorway ring road), H4 (Razdrto – Ajdovščina – Vrtojba) and H7 (Dolga Vas – the Hungarian border). Since 1 January 2026, an electronic vignette has no longer been required on the H5 and H6 roads. Certain other sections of motorways and expressways may also be exempt from the electronic vignette requirement.

Do I have to pay any additional charges in Slovenia besides the electronic vignette?

Yes. The electronic vignette does not cover all charges associated with driving in Slovenia. A separate charge applies, for example, when travelling through the Karawanks Tunnel on the A2 motorway between Austria and Slovenia. This charge is not included in the electronic vignette and must be paid separately at the toll booth before entering the tunnel or through selected prepaid services. We therefore recommend allowing for this additional charge when planning your journey.

The possibility of changing the vehicle registration number depends primarily on whether the electronic vignette has already become valid. If you selected a future validity start date when making your purchase, you can request a change to the vehicle registration number directly from DARS, the official issuer of Slovenian electronic vignettes. However, once the electronic vignette has become valid, changing the vehicle registration number is generally no longer possible. We therefore recommend carefully checking all the information entered before completing your order, particularly the vehicle registration number and the selected vehicle category.

How is the validity of electronic vignettes checked in Slovenia, and what are the fines for breaking the rules?

In Slovenia, electronic vignettes are continuously checked using cameras installed on motorways and expressways, as well as mobile enforcement vehicles operated by DARS. The Slovenian police and Financial Administration also take part in enforcement. The vehicle registration number is automatically compared with the information in the central electronic vignette system. If no valid electronic vignette is registered for the vehicle, a fine of EUR 300 may be imposed. A penalty may also be imposed if an incorrect vehicle category was selected. Before travelling, we therefore recommend checking not only the validity of the electronic vignette but also the accuracy of the vehicle registration number and the selected vehicle category.
