Who is the 6-month motorcycle vinjeta for?
Slovenia sells the half-year vinjeta only for vehicle category 1 - motorcycles, tricycles and quadricycles - and it is aimed squarely at the riding season. Six months of cover runs comfortably from the first warm weekends of spring through to the end of autumn, which is exactly the window most riders actually use their bike in. Because motorcycles cannot buy a monthly vinjeta in Slovenia, the half-year vignette is the middle tier between the weekly and the annual one, and for anyone crossing into Slovenia more than a couple of times a season it usually costs far less than buying weekly vignettes over and over.
How does validity work for motorcycles?
The Slovenian vinjeta has been fully electronic for years, so there is nothing to stick on the bike - the vignette is registered against the motorcycle's registration plate and enforcement cameras read that plate. The half-year vinjeta then runs for six consecutive months from the start date you pick, and validity is counted in calendar months rather than in days: one that starts on 1 March is valid until 1 September, and one that starts on 31 January is valid until 31 July - and if the sixth month has no matching day, it runs to the last day of that month instead. That lets you time it to the opening of your season instead of wasting weeks of cover. One point matters more for riders than for drivers: a vignette bought in a car category does not cover a motorcycle. Choose the motorcycle category when ordering and enter the plate exactly as it appears on the bike, because every vehicle needs its own vinjeta.
When is a different vinjeta a better fit?
For a single trip - a long weekend in the Julian Alps, a run down to the coast, or transit toward Croatia or Italy - the weekly motorcycle vinjeta is the cheaper answer, and there is no point paying for half a year you will not ride. At the other end, if you ride all year round or your season regularly stretches past six months, compare the half-year price with the annual one before you decide: the gap between them is usually small enough that the annual vinjeta wins on convenience alone. And if you also drive a car in Slovenia, remember that it needs its own vignette in its own category - one purchase never covers two vehicles.
